Abstract

Experimental results are presented concerning the generation and dynamics of double layers and multiple double layers in laboratory plasmas. The nonlinear effects and the elementary processes related to their phenomenology are investigated. The transition to chaos of the dynamics of these structures is analyzed. The similarities with the phenomenology of natural phenomena such as aurora are emphasized. The potential role of such structures in cosmic particle acceleration is discussed..
