Abstract

The disordered strontium hexa-aluminate crystals Sr1-xNdyLax-yMgxAl12-xO19 (ASL) proved to be a system with a good potential for 4F3/2→4I9/2 laser emission at ~ 900 nm. There are two main different non-equivalent Nd3+ centers in disordered ASL crystals. New data on the symmetry of one the Nd3+ centers in ASL, prevailing at low x composition parameter, provided by the polarized absorption spectra are presented. The results of a parametric crystal field calculation, based on the experimental data, are also analyzed..
