Abstract

In this study two sets of hydroxyapatite powders (hydroxyapatite (HA) and hydroxyapatite doped with titanium dioxide (HATiO2)) were synthesized by aqueous precipitation method. The HA-TiO2 powder was obtained by incorporating TiO2 as dopant, into HA powder. The resulting powders are used as components in inorganic phase for the formulation of a new endodontic sealer (in dual form paste). In the paper, the powders have been characterized by X-ray diffraction technique (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Thermal analysis (TG-DTG). According with the analysis nanocristaline partially carbonated hydroxyapatite and TiO2 doped hydroxyapatite have been obtained, with average crystallite size between 20 and 60 nm. With increasing of the heat treatment, the decomposition of the carbonate was emphasized which induced a deformation of the elemental cell. Also titanium dioxide induced a change in the structural parameters due to the substitution of the Ca2+ with Ti4+ . The best results for application in endodontics were obtained for the HA powder treated at 300 0C un-doped and doped, respectively..
