Abstract

In this work, we reported on a large improvement of the humidity sensitivity of pure magnesium ferrite by the modification of the surface granulation and material's morphology, based only upon the change of the thermal treatment parameters (temperature and time). Humidity sensitivity of MgFe2O4 was studied in the range 0 %-98 % RH. The studied samples were prepared by a new method, the precursor method of self-combustion. The nanometer powder was obtained that was pressed in disc shape and then subjected to heat treatments. The spinel structure of the ferrite compound was confirmed by the presence of XRD peaks. The morphology was studied by a high resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The best results were obtained by an optimum thermal treatment in air at 1000o C for 30 minutes. This ferrite is characterized by good humidity sensitivity for large humidity interval, between 0 % RH and 98 % RH, and a short response time of about 70 seconds. These results are of high importance for applications..
